CBD drug interactions have adverse effects so it is important for consumers to know that they should not take CBD and Prednisone together! No, it is not safe to use CBD oil while taking Prednisone simultaneously. CBD can inhibit CYP3A in the body. Read more.

Can you take CBD and Prednisone?

CBD drug interactions arise mainly due to liver metabolism issues and present risks that consumers are not currently well aware of. The liver enzyme complex “cytochrome P450” is responsible for the metabolism of over half of the drugs on the market today. These liver enzymes also metabolize CBD and Prednisone.

CBD and Prednisone Drug Interactions

Different compounds are metabolized in different ways by liver enzymes. Taking two compounds that are metabolized by the same enzymes can alter the way that both compounds act in the body. When you take CBD, the cytochrome P450 enzymes are inhibited. That means that other compounds like Prednisone may either stay in the body for longer because the enzymes cannot break them down or be essentially “inactivated” entirely because there is no enzyme that can deliver them to the rest of the body.

Other CBD Drug Interactions

In addition to changing the way that Prednisone works in the body, many other common pharmaceuticals have drug interactions with CBD. Most pharmacists are not currently trained to screen for CBD use in consultations, so it is very important to let your doctor and pharmacist know if you are taking CBD and Prednisone (or any other medications).

CBD Side Effects

CBD side effects are generally mild but do exist. The most common side effects of CBD include tiredness, diarrhea, and changes in appetite/weight. If you believe you are experiencing CBD side effects, do not take more CBD. Side effects are the first sign that you are taking too much CBD or that CBD is not right for you. Be sure to consult with your doctor if you experience CBD side effects if you are taking CBD and Prednisone or any other medication, and before you take CBD for the first time.

Can you safely take CBD oil with Prednisone?

I’ve heard that CBD can interact with many drugs. Are there interactions with Prednisone and CBD oil?

Joel Taylor (Thursday, August 12, 2021):

Both CBD oil and Prednisone are inhibitors of the cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP3A, which means that taking both of them together would result in them having to compete for metabolism. What this means is that the interactions with CBD oil and Prednisone could be dangerous, potentially leading to increased side effects from both. If you are on Prednisone or any other medication, you should talk to your doctor before deciding to try CBD oil as well. Additionally, give it a few hours in between doses to minimize adverse reactions as much as possible.

Osasere Okunloye (Thursday, August 12, 2021):

Studies show that CBD can interact with Prednisone by inhibiting the same enzyme (Cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP3A) as prednisone, and using both of them together may decrease glucocorticoid clearance and increase side effects of Prednisone. Before taking CBD with prednisone or any other medication, you should seek professional advice from a doctor. Reply Follow Share Avik Das Wednesday, January 12, 2022 No, it is not safe to use CBD oil while taking Prednisone simultaneously. CBD can inhibit CYP3A in the body, but Prednisone is also known to inhibit CYP3A in the body. Therefore, using them together might give good results in glucose clearance, but facing systemic side effects is inevitable. It is always best to consult a doctor before using CBD oil with Prednisone.
