Rated 5 out of 5 by fdk344 from Worked great. Renovation details: Early June seeding. After using Quikpro on about 4500-5000 sq ft of Roughstalk Bluegrass (poa trivialis), I used “Step One for Seeding” to spot seed a couple dozen areas. I used Scott’s PA seed, I think it’s the same as the NE seed. Previous lawn health: My lawn mostly consists of K-31, perennial rye, and KY bluegrass. I have some warm season grasses as well, but I hate them and I’ve wiped most of them out with Q4. I’ve been killing quack grass, nimblewill, JP stiltgrass as well. Still haven’t gotten the mousear chickweed to stop coming back in the spring. Method I didn’t disturb the soil after Quikpro. I waited, watched. Hand weeded some smaller weeds and, top coated everything with mushroom soil. I Applied Scotts Step 1 Starter after rolling/seeding/strawing – probably right after the last rolling. Results: I had no whitening of any of cool season grasses. The only whitening I saw was on the nutsedge and purslane that came up. Even with the nutsedge that came up, considering, I had pretty good suppression of purslane, smartweed, chickweed, and crabgrass. It didn’t affect the oat grass in the topsoil or the mushrooms for that matter. Pretty satisfied with result, great germination, less where I had washout which isn’t the products fault.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Ryan600 from So disappointed I loamed and seeded plow damage, and over seeded my entire lawn.. my local garden center recommended step 1 for seeding. Reading the package it said for newly seeded and over seeded lawns. It also said that whitening can occur.. but this is crazy, my whole lawn looks terrible. I hope this is truly only temporary.. I can not recommend this product.
Rated 2 out of 5 by avrick from Disappointing results I’ve used Scotts products for years with very good results. This product has discolored all my new planted grass from last fall. My lawn has multiple spots of yellow and yelowish white grass. Extremely disappointing. and there is clover that was not killed as anticipated.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Mt830 from The worst We bought this to stop crabgrass and weeds. After applying it the next week we had a ton of dandelions come out. It seems the weeds love it. We will never purchase it again
Rated 1 out of 5 by SCchelmsford from Don’t Use This Product I spent a lot of time, sweat, and money on preparing my front lawn for reseeding, and over seeding. I did everything right, except find and read these other reviews for this product. Top soil was raked evenly, this Step 1 for Seeding was spread according to the correct distribution, seed was spread. Whole lawn was rolled, fluffed up, and watered properly at dawn and dust. It has been 17 days without a single seed germanization. Nothing! My local garden store recommended this product, and I have since shared the story with them and to never recommend this product to anyone again. Extremely dissapointed with this product!
Rated 1 out of 5 by JPH 13 from Yellow/white streaking across my yard! Put this down over two weeks ago and my yard looks terrible! I have light yellow streaks across the front yard, so embarrassing!
Rated 1 out of 5 by Another Unhappy Customer from Total Disaster! Bought 3 – 15,000 square foot – 4 step programs for our large lawns, a substantial investment. Chose Step 1 for seeding solely on the recommendation of our nursery rep. We are just sick to see we have the same problem so many others have faced with the yellow spotting after checking the problem on line. The lawn looks horrible and is getting worse 3 weeks after the yellowing started. Previous reviews indicate Scotts has known about this problem for a while and should be advising retailers of this problem. Had we known this we never would have purchased. Scott’s – what can you do to make this right with your customers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by ChrisN from Turns grass whitish yellow I applied this product to my entire lawn area, including some newly loamed areas, and then had the new loam hydroseeded. It’s been 16 days since the hydroseed and I have seen 0% germination, and patches of my existing grass have turned a whitish yellow. I’m really disappointed with this product so far, and I’m concerned that the hydroseed won’t germinate and I’ll have wasted money not only on the Scotts product but also the hydro seed.

Can I Put Down Scotts Super Turf Builder Plus 2 If I Overseeded Four Weeks Ago?
A well-kept, healthy lawn should be plush, free of weeds and diseases, and as green as the neighbors’ envious hearts. Weed and feed products are designed to provide needed nutrients to the grass while poisoning weeds that want to steal the lawn’s food. Scotts Super Turf Builder with Plus 2 Weed Control works on several species of lawn grasses. While the company’s website recommends waiting four weeks to put down grass seed after applying the weed and feed, seeding first means waiting a different length of time before you use the product.
Healthy Lawn Chemistry
Scotts Super Turf Builder with Plus 2 Weed Control, now called simply Super Turf Builder with Weed and Feed, contains more nitrogen and phosphorus than plain Turf Builder Weed and Feed, to provide faster green-up. Super Turf Builder contains 29 percent nitrogen, 2 percent phosphorus and 3 percent potassium, while plain Turf Builder contains 28 percent nitrogen, no phosphorus and 3 percent potassium. The active weed-killing ingredients are 2,4-D and mecoprop. Environmental health agencies in some areas list 2,4-D as a chemical known to cause cancer or birth defects, so use with caution.
If you are unable to find Super Turf Builder Weed and Feed, Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action provides similar results. It kills weeds, prevents the new weeds from sprouting and feeds the grass.
Timing Is Everything
The Scotts website question-and-answer section states that grass seeds should be allowed to germinate and grow tall and strong enough to be mowed four times before you apply weed and feed. No entirely specific time period is provided, because different grass species grow at different rates, and growth is affected by many variables, including soil quality, temperature and rainfall or manual irrigation.
The Nitty Gritty
This turf builder weed and feed should be applied with a mechanical spreader for even distribution. When using a spreader, Scotts Turf Builder Plus 2 spreader settings vary depending on the device. Set broadcast and rotary spreaders at 3.5, hand-held spreaders on 3 and drop spreaders on 5. Even if you’ve used the turf builder products for years, always check the package directions to ensure that the instructions haven’t changed.
Before applying any fertilizer or herbicide product, put on a mask, safety goggles, gloves, long sleeves, long pants and closed toe shoes. After applying the weed and feed and cleaning the spreader, wash your clothing in hot water and detergent to remove any dust or residue.
Wait for a calm day when temperatures are not expected to rise above 90 degrees Fahrenheit and no rainfall is expected for at least 24 hours. Water the lawn first to moisten the grass, or start the application when the grass is moist from dew. The product should be applied while weeds are actively growing in the lawn. A second application may be made, but wait at least 30 days — and do not use the product more than twice each year.
Scotts Turf Builder Plus 2 Liquid
If you have a very small lawn, an alternative to the granular Scotts weed and feed products is the Scotts Liquid Turf Builder with Plus 2 Weed Control. This liquid fertilizer provides a quick boost of nitrogen as well as killing clover, dandelions and other weeds. Simply attach the garden hose and spray the lawn when the weeds are actively growing.
Use It Carefully
Make sure the product does not spill or drift on the wind to desirable plants, and don’t use it within several feet of fruit or vegetable plants. Sweep up any fertilizer that drifts onto sidewalks or driveways and toss it back onto the lawn.
Do not apply on St. Augustine grass, including the Floratam variety. St. Augustine grasses (Stenotaphrum secundatum) grow best in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 10. The product is not appropriate for carpet grass (Axonopus affinis), which thrives in USDA zones 9 through 10, or dichondra (Dichondra spp.), a creeping ground cover often used in place of standard lawn grass in USDA zones 7 through 11.
