Seed balls as weeding favors

“Seed Bombs” are all the rage right now… and if you are looking for a truly hands on wedding favor – you might have found your match! Seed bombing or ‘aerial reforestation’ actually started as a technique of introducing vegetation to land by throwing or dropping compressed bundles of soil containing live seeds. Basically hippies would make these little seed bombs and throw them onto random areas of land with no vegetation to kindly spruce up an area. Little did they know that their mother-earth loving ways would start an ecological trend! So go get your ‘guerrilla gardening‘ on and make these fun seed bomb wedding favors! Warning: this is a dirty craft!

  • Crayola Air-Dry Clay (terra cotta color)
  • Earthworm Castings fertilizer
  • wildflower seeds – native to your area
  • glass bowl and spoon
  • the FREE download tags below
  • your choice in color of 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock
  • stapler and decorative scissors
  • 3″ x 4″ clear gift baggies and paper crinkle
  • paper trimmer

This recipe is extremely easy. You will need one part air-dry clay to two parts earthworm castings fertilizer (or the like). So if you do one cup of clay you’ll need 2 cups of fertilizer – if your off a bit it’s absolutely no big deal! Place clay and fertilizer in a glass bowl. **A three cup recipe makes roughly 50 seed bombs or 16 – 3 bomb favors.

Mix – mix – mix! You’ll feel like it’s never going to actually mix together but all the sudden it will! **Did I mention this is a dirty craft!

Once you have your clay mixed, pour some of your wildflower seeds into a small bowl. Then taking a small quarter size piece of the clay/dirt mixture, dip it into the seeds!

Next roll the mixture into a little ball with the palms of your hands and place on a foiled or newspapered tray. **I dip the clay/dirt mixture into the seeds is for two reasons; one – when you mix the seeds into the clay and dirt, the seeds are sharp and can really hurt your hands; two – the dip method ensures the perfect amount of seeds in each bomb.

Keep dipping and rolling your seed bombs! Then let them dry in a well ventilated area. My bombs took around three days to fully dry. The picture below of the tray of bombs are what they look like fully dry. You do not want to package moist bombs – they could grow mold!

‘You’re the Bomb‘ Seed Bomb Favor Tags

Download and print our FREE ‘seed bomb’ tags – then using a paper trimmer or scissors cut along the lines. There are six tags per page.

Next, fold each tag completely in half – then finish off the edge with a decorative scissor.

Stuff a little paper crinkle into the bottom of your clear gift bags – then add three seed bombs!

Next, take your tags and place them around the top of the stuffed gift bags and staple the tag twice. The top of the gift bag should be inside the folded tag – the staples will seal the bags closed.

Staple all your adorable ‘seed bomb’ favors!
