Like to grow your own tortoise food?
As a tortoise keeper you already know how important it is to give your tortoise the best diet possible.
Mediterranean tortoises thrive on a diet of leafy green plants and whilst some are available to buy in the supermarket, you can now grow a bigger selection at home for a fraction of the price.
Pro Rep have just released their Tortoise Life Tortoise Feed Growing Kit. The kit contains everything you need to grow nutritious, edible ‘weeds’ for your tortoise.
- Seeds (enough for 4 sowings!).
- Seed trays.
- Propagator top.
- Full instructions.
The seeds typically include Dandelion, Smooth Hawks Beard, Nipplwort, Chicory, Smoth Sow Thistle, Great Plantain, Hoary Plantain, Ribwort Plantain, Common Mallow, Musk Mallow, Dwarf Mallow, Shepherds Purse, Hairy Bittercress, Wavy Bittercress, White/ Dutch Clover, Red Clover, Common Vetch, Sainfoin, Creeping Bell Flower, Field Bindweed and Hedge Mustard! That’s a lot of variety!
If you already have the kit for growing plants, you can also purchase the seeds separately.
We can’t wait to harvest our first crop from our kit. We’ll also be giving these plants to our bearded dragons and skinks too as they will also love them. Seasoned with a sprinkling of Nutrobal it’s just about perfect food.
ProRep Tortoise Feed Grow Kit with 4 Sowings ***** CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK*****
The tortoise feed growing kit is a complete kit for growing edible weeds for tortoises. The kit contains: Edible weed seeds – enough for 4 sowings, seed trays, propagator top, compost and full instructions.
The wild seed mix contained in the ProRep feed growing kit has been developed after many years of careful observation of wild tortoises and their food plants. The select mix of annual and perennial plants has been grown specifically for the tortoise feed kit and has not been ‘padded out’ with cheap grass seed that Mediterranean tortoises do not readily eat. This kit can be used all year round to provide a source of nutritious, weed leaves that allow tortoises to graze naturally and obtain a wide range of nutrients essential for slow, healthy growth.
The mix of seeds will vary but can typically include dandelion, smooth hawk’s beard, nipplewort, chicory, smooth sow thistle, great plantain, hoary plantain, ribwort plantain, common mallow, musk mallow, dwarf mallow, shepherd’s purse, hairy bitter cress, wavy bitter cress, white/Dutch clover, red clover, common vetch, sainfoin, creeping bell-flower, field bindweed and hedge mustard. All of which are safe for your tortoise to graze on.
The trays can be placed in the tortoise enclosure or the leaves harvested to mix with other foods. Harvested trays will re-grow for multiple uses. This kit contains all of the equipment and seed that you require for a happy tortoise. These seeds can also be used to sow an outdoor enclosure.
