what will happen if you eat weed seeds

Marijuana – the Happy Helper for Weight Loss

Pot smokers are bound to get the munchies, and are therefore overeating, which means marijuana couldn’t possibly be slimming, right? Wrong! The studies and the evidence suggest that there is a real link between marijuana and weight loss. This article explores the ways marijuana may affect the metabolic system, causing weight loss for those who use it.

The effect that marijuana has on weight loss and metabolism is incredible, and has become a motivating factor for people to use cannabis. Although most of us are familiar with the fact that weed gives you the munchies, and can in fact contribute to over eating, most of us don’t know how it affects the metabolic system. And although it can be easy to assume that pot smokers should just get fat from over eating all the time, the evidence suggests otherwise.

Numerous studies have supported the theory that marijuana in fact slims, rather than fattens, although the link between the two is currently still blurred. However, there are ways to make use of a marijuana diet to successfully achieve weight loss. In this article, we will explore the different ways that marijuana can affect the metabolic system, and ways to make it work in an endeavor to lose weight.

Marijuana lowers fasting insulin

Before we delve into studies, we should explore the role of insulin in the body. Insulin is produced first and foremost by the pancreas, and insulin is basically the vehicle through which sugar can get into the cells so that those cells can then convert that to energy. What happens when this system is out of balance is that the body can tire quickly or glucose can build in the blood and damage arteries. Fasting insulin is the kind of insulin that the body produces before eating, or when fasting.

A study conducted by the American Journal of Medicine concluded in a study of over 4,500 adults that smoking weed at least three times a week lowered fasting insulin by 16%. It seems that cannabis works by promoting insulin absorption in the body, making it easier for the body to produce the good kind of cholesterol. These factors help to make the metabolic system of the body more efficient overall.

When we observe Western society as a whole, and how much sugar is a part of the regular diet, it makes sense that cannabis can cause weight loss, at least in Westerners. The truth is, if a regular diet is maintained (that means not being a sucker to the munchies), then the body is generally more able to digest and process the amount of glucose arriving in the body. This gives the body energy, rather than glucose turning into the kind of cholesterol that blocks arteries and causes obesity.

CBD Oil and Hemp Oil — Uses and Future Military Acceptance?

Are you aware of the potential healing and recovery properties of cannabidiol, also known as CBD? How about hemp oil? What is the military stance on using such products even if they contain no THC (the psychoactive drug)?

In this article, we dig into the differences between the two and benefits being tested right now and answer the biggest question: Are these considered marijuana and illegal to use? Here are some things you need to know about CBD, hemp and THC:

  • With only trace amounts of THC (less than .3%), it is unlikely you would fail a drug test using hemp/CBD.
  • The CBD oil and hemp oil come from the legal, non-psychoactive hemp plant.
  • The Cannabis Sativa L produces two types: marijuana and hemp. CBD is produced by both, but THC is not in both.
  • Marijuana plants contain enough THC to get users “high;” hemp does not.

CBD oil

CBD is one of many naturally occurring cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis. Yes, this is a product of the same plant family of marijuana and hemp. Cannabis does not mean marijuana. Cannabis is the genus name of the plant family into which all forms of marijuana and hemp fall.

Natural CBD oil and hemp oil do not contain enough THC to be illegal (or get you high). It is negligible at best, but must be under .3% to be used on the market as hemp or CBD oil. THC is the narcotic in marijuana that give you the “high” (psychoactive effect). THC is illegal within the federal government and military, but legal in some states.

However, the non-psychoactive CBD has been gaining popularity throughout the media and scientific community (see links to studies below) with noticeable recovery benefits and without the illegal substances and carcinogens of some forms of marijuana. CDB oil has been shown to help cancer patients and is used to treat many ailments, such as epilepsy, and psychological problems. It has anti-inflammatory benefits as well.

Hemp oil

Hemp oil contains phytocannabinoids, but it is not marijuana. Hemp contains more than 80 phytocannabinoids, including CBD. It can be made from the seeds of the hemp plant. Hemp oil is rich in polyunsaturated fats like Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids, as well as Vitamin E.

Hemp oil can be used in cooking, shampoos and soaps, and because of the high Vitamin E content, it is an antioxidant that can help the body fight off the catabolic effects of stress. Unlike CBD oil, hemp oil has a nutritional value. It can be consumed in capsule form as well.

The endocannabinoid system

Why are cannabinoids like CBD and hemp important? Our body has millions of cannabinoid receptors that are part of the brain, skin and central nervous system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). CBD interacts with the body’s ECS, and our body naturally produces cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids.

Cannabinoid receptors are found throughout our body from our biggest organ — the skin to the brain, digestive tract and throughout the peripheral nervous system. The main purpose of the ECS is to protect the nerve fibers themselves, the immune system and helping to regulate the autonomic nervous system, which impact appetite, sleep, mood, stress and pain.

Because of its placement within the central nervous system, it has impact within the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. These are our “fight-or-flight” or “rest-and-digest” states, respectively, connecting our hormonal responses to stress in life-or-death situations and our recovery from those moments as well.

The legal issues and DoD stances

According to the Controlled Substances Act, marijuana includes any resin from any part of the cannabis plant. This would include CBD and hemp oil.

However, the Agricultural Act of 2014 allows state agricultural businesses, colleges and universities to obtain permits to extract CBD from industrial hemp. In states where marijuana is legal and the transport across state lines is legal for industrial hemp, the flow of CBD oil or industrial hemp also is considered legal.

The companies selling CBD oil are permitted to use industrial hemp. Therefore, it is not in contradiction of the Controlled Substances Act, making CBD oil legal and not a substance the Drug Enforcement Administration would consider illicit, because it contains only trace amounts of THC. The hemp growers have to be careful and are highly regulated not to allow the THC values to increase within their substances they sell. The CBD that is produced must have zero THC, which makes it not testable on any drug test.

Do your research on the branch of service and its official stance on hemp or CBD (with no THC). The stances tend to ebb and flow at the speed of politics and military bureaucracy.

Veteran In the business

I recently asked Army veteran Craig Henderson of Extract Labs about his journey from the military to Colorado and into the world of legal cannabis products. Here are some of those questions and answers:

What was the journey from the Army to the legal marijuana business? Henderson was an airborne paratrooper for four years, then decided to use his GI Bill to go to college. After a degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree along the way, he found a path to Colorado, where he started working for a new and legal marijuana company.

He grew with the business and created methods to distribute and ingest these products, using edibles, creams, oils, vapes and more. This type of the cannabis business was mainly for medical and recreational marijuana users. THC was the product people were seeking at that time in the industry; however, he noticed there are big benefits in non-THC cannabis in products from the hemp plant, such as CBD oil and hemp seed oil.

Henderson created a new company, Extract Labs, that focuses on the “non-alcoholic beer” version of the same products above. The CBD oil products have the same types of ingestion models as above, but with none of the psychoactive effects of the THC type of cannabis.

“Consider this the health and wellness side of the business,” Henderson said. “We have customers who use these products for depression, sleep assistance, PTSD, anxiety, high blood pressure, cancer and pain relief, even severe pain relief.”

Other veterans in the CBD business

Synthetic cannabinoids

You may have heard about products like Spice or K2, which is a synthetic cannabinoid made from chemicals, not from the cannabis or hemp plant, whereas CBD oil is organic, naturally occurring and extracted using natural methods. These chemicals sprayed over such things as tobacco have caused severe side effects, even deaths, and can be two to 100 times stronger than THC.

These products have been part of the sweeping Defense Department regulations regarding any product related to cannabinoids. Recently, more than 76 people in a New Haven, Connecticut, park overdosed with severe side effects from a “bad batch” of synthetic marijuana. This became a mass casualty event that has nothing to do with hemp, CBD or marijuana for that matter, as it was laced with an opioid.

Medical studies/reports on CBD oil Anti-inflammatory: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2828614/

If you are considering going into this business, you do not necessarily need to move to one of the several states where medical and recreational marijuana are legal. To grow, sell and distribute hemp products, it is easier to live in a state where both medical and recreational marijuana are legal, but some states with agricultural laws allow for hemp to be grown.

If you are considering using the CBD or hemp oils, it is legal to buy online and locally. However, do your research and make sure you select a legitimate seller that adheres to strict third-party and government regulations.

(4) Zapshroom
(5) Blazing Hibiscus
(6) Solar Sunflower
(7) Icy Crocus
(8) Jet Black Rose
(9) Royal Rose

If you need to know what plants to use to produce each of the above seeds, I can modify the list to include that info and repost it.

OK, here’s a list with what to use. I’ll just put the hints and seeds to use in spoiler tags this time.

(1) Spooky Pumpkin (Spookify a Pumpkin!–Use Spooky Carrot and Pumpkin)
(2) Royal Milkberry (Mix 2 types of Milkberry!–Use Milkberry and Crown Milkberry)
(3) Golden Apple (Mix red with green!–Use Balloon Apple and Green Apple)
(4) Zapshroom (Mix red with blue!–Use Red Mushroom and Blue Mushroom)
(5) Blazing Hibiscus (Mix red with yellow!–Use Hibiscus and Sunny Hibiscus)
(6) Solar Sunflower (A Sweetpea and a Sunflower!–Use Sweetpea and Sunflower)
(7) Icy Crocus (Mix 2 types of Crocuses!–Use Mini-Crocus and Frosty Crocus)
(8) Jet Black Rose (Mix red with white!–Use Ruby Red Rose and Bright White Rose)
(9) Royal Rose (Mix black with gold!–Use Jet Black Rose and Golden Apple)
(10) Spooky Carrot (Mix 2 types of Carrot!–Use Carrot and Winter Carrot)
(11) Starfall Radish (Mix a starry flower and a big T!–Use Twinkle Flower and Big Turnip)
(12) Royal Radish (Mix a maidenly herb and a big T!–Use Maiden’s Mint and Big Turnip)

Just plant the two seeds I specify in the parentheses next to each other in Rabbit’s Garden. When you harvest one or both plants, you should get at least one special seed. For example, to get Spooky Carrot, plant a Carrot Seed next to a Winter Carrot Seed. When you harvest the plants, you should get at least one Spooky Carrot Seed. Plant that seed to get a Spooky Carrot.

You’ll notice that some combinations use some really common seeds along with really rare seeds. You can increase your chances of getting special seeds and minimize your use of rare seeds by planting seeds using the below pattern.

A: Common Seed
B: Rare Seed

This way, you only use one rare seed but use four common seeds and can get up to five special seeds at once.

SPOILERS
For example, for Spooky Carrot, Carrot Seeds are really common. Winter Carrot Seeds aren’t quite as common. If you plant like the below, you can increase your chances of getting more Spooky Carrot Seeds while not needing to use as many Winter Carrot Seeds. You can also leave the Winter Carrot plant planted and just harvest the Carrot plants then plant more Carrot Seeds to keep getting more Spooky Carrot Seeds with little effort.

Hope that helps! Let us know if you have more questions or need me to clarify something.

Seeds

Seeds are useful items the player can buy, find, or get as a reward from doing favors, to help with growing new species of food or flowers, or just to duplicate their quantity.

Players can plant seeds in the hundred acre wood world in their own garden.

Seeds do not require any maintenance other than being watered. The water will last for 1 hour before they need more. Weeds may also grow in the field and reduce the harvest of the seed. There is no way to upgrade the watering can to increase the length, but sometimes Winnie the Pooh and friends will lend a hand by watering and/or pulling weeds.

Beginning in the 90´s Starting with a variegated Blueberry F1 male which showed variegations and leaf mutations. This male was crossed with Shesherazade (Afgahni Kush) and Sweet Purple (Thai X Dutch Genetics). Throughout this period from time-to-time again mutants kept popping up, far from being stabilized. During the period of 1995-2000 NL#5 Haze, Jack Herer and Durban Poison have been introduced into the SWAG line. This line has been further refined and in 2003 the first stable mutants have been bred. These mutants been worked until 2011 leading to the SWAG Original. From 2011 Amnesia and Super Lemon Haze cuts from Holland have been crossed into the lineage. Leading onwards from 2013 Critical and then the newly developed Aprico Delia (AD 17 Mutant) have been introduced. The entire project stretched over almost 3 decades, introducing popular strains of that period while continuously selecting for plants in the offspring which showed leaf morphologies such as Duckfoot, SWAG and variegations whilst improving flavour and potency. The leaf mutations were further strengthened in their expression through selective breeding. The end product SWAG OG is the most exceptional combination of legacy strains, whilst barely looking like a regular Cannabis plant.
If you are looking for an upbeat high like in the good old days, whilst relaxing the mind, then most of the phenos within this strain are for you. Yet, be warned some phenos are rather heavy hitters coming after their Indica heritage effect-wise, pleasing the Indica-lovers. If you are looking for some of the craziest and most fu***d up Cannabis mutations around, then this strain is for you. Truly a unique novelty that ticks many boxes and lays the foundation for more craziness and amazing cannabis to come. Either if you want to grow amazing old-school weed or want to experience Cannabis in a form never seen before, than get yourself some SWAG OG. Great for breeders, enthusiasts and Cannabis lovers, looking for something special.

Morphology & Growth: SWAG OG grows about 1m to 2m in size. Some Phenos produce rather stocky Indica leaning structure others are a bit more stretched out and can reach up to 2m. The leaves are non-serrated Swag laves and the buds also have a unique structure, producing oval-egg formed sugary flowers. Even though quite homogenous, this strain line will produce some runts, crested, variegated and crinkled craziness plants. Most of our Variegated lines emerged out of the SWAG gene pool.

Aromas & Flavours: Most plants have an old-school Haze aroma blending in with Forest honey. Yet other plants express more of an earthy piney aroma with hints of Diesel. Due to the diverse genetical background a wide range of phenotypes and aromas can be found.

Effects: The effect of SWAG OG are typical Sativa as also expressed in its terpenes. It´s a typical feel good and activity strain. It´s mild stimulating, uplifting and calming your mind removing all stress and providing an overall feeling of happiness and bliss. Some more rare phenos come with some heavier indica effects.

Cultivation: SWAG OG is rather easy to cultivate outdoors. It is not very picky about nutrients only make sure to provide enough Calcium, Magnesium and other minerals found in mostly Miocene, calcareous and light soils, High in Lime, Clay, Sand and Silt. Indoors it can be a bit trickier compared to modern hybrids.

Schwag

Low-quality cannabis that usually contains buds with stems, seeds, and leaves. Schwag is distinct from trim, which is sugar leaves and other plant material trimmed off of buds.

“I only smoke top-shelf buds and save the schwag for making hash or edibles.”

What is schwag?

Schwag is low-quality cannabis and generally considered too bad to sell to a dispensary. Unlike trim, which is sugar leaves and other plant material trimmed off buds, schwag is buds that may contain stems, seeds, fan leaves, and other parts of the plant. Schwag is usually harsh to smoke and better used for making edibles or hash. Schwag is also distinct from other low-quality cannabis, such as brick weed, which is usually pressed into a brick for discreet and easy distribution.

Afgooey Seeds

The Afgooey marijuana strain, also referred to as ‘Afgoo’ or ‘Afghooey’ was first cultivated in California’s sunny climes. This strain is a cross between the ‘Afghani#1’ and the ‘Maui Haze’ strain. This is an indica-predominant breed that grows tall and bears buds sagging with resinous trichomes that are very gooey (or sticky) and the strain gets its name from the unique gooiness.

More about Afgooey Seeds

How to grow Afgooey Seeds Pot Plants?

Bearing almost all the attributes of an indica-heavy strain, the Afgooey plant grows up a maximum height of 4.5 ft and tends to be bushy with dark green, broad palmate-styled leaves.

Indoor growing vs. outdoor growing

Though the strain was developed chiefly for breeding indoors, it can also thrive outdoors, if grown in an open-air setting that is warm and sunny. Follow all the steps correctly if you are looking for the best results in a hydroponic setting. It takes about 8-9 weeks for flowers to appear and be ready to harvest 32 ounces per sq meter of plantation.

This strain does exceptionally well in a region where the weather stays warm and there is good sunshine for the better part of the day. You can strike it rich by reaping 35 ounces of buds per plant starting from late September-early October.

Feeding

Since Afgooey plants are heavy consumers, you can be generous in supplying nutrients to the soil or hydroponic medium.

Growing techniques

The plant also grows well when super-cropping and LST (low stress training) techniques are used, resulting in heavy yields.

SOG and SCROG grow systems are suggested for getting high yields. Make sure the grow space is well ventilated so that the plants do not feel stressed out when the humidity level is on the higher side.

Recreational use

The vapors of the strain have an almost instantaneous effect, hitting you hard. Inhale the smoke slowly or else the stoning effects will throw you on the couch and keep you immobilized for long.

A blend of 5.8 million Australians who have attempted Cannabis and 1 million people who have used marijuana in the previous year makes Cannabis the most common illegal substance in the country. Its use is more commonplace among 20-30-year-olds than some other age gathering. The use of marijuana frequently trails off as a person enters their late twenties and mid-thirties.

About 33% of Australians 22 years or older have used Cannabis. In Australia, recreational use of Cannabis is among the most raised on the planet. The country is on the seventh rank in the United Nation’s 2014 World Drug Report.

Australia is where the possession, growing, buying, or selling of marijuana is illegal, and in every one of the country’s domains, the punishments are different.

The person that has a ticket much of the time can decide to go to drug classes, so they don’t need to pay the fine. Growing multiple plants or being gotten with marijuana as well as with smoking material may trouble you with a fine.

Legalization

Australia sanctioned medicinal Cannabis at the federal level on February 24, 2016. The government indicated that they were intending to guarantee that Australia was a significant supplier of medicinal Cannabis, with atmosphere and rural conditions making Australia appropriate for a crop for industry-scale manufacturing.

That prominent, growing cannabis crops in Australia requires a broad licensing endorsement procedure and specific plans, including appropriate manufacturing forms.

The ongoing change is that possession and growing are presently legal to a constrained degree. The differentiation between decriminalization and legalization is essential. Legalization implies that something is permitted; decriminalization suggests that even though something isn’t allowed, it’s not a criminal offense.

Legalization Benefits

It may need up to 6-8 months to draft the necessary regulations. It takes time to take a goose at how production, distribution, and security will be supervised. All rules will depend upon whether it is for research purposes or growing and selling.

There is no uncertainty that this is a positive advancement for users of medical marijuana, as it will be legally easy to help patients experiencing chronic diseases. It isn’t just an advantage to the individuals; the suggestions for Australia’s economy are also incredibly positive.

The University of Sydney Business School appraises this new pursuit into the cannabis business for Australia as it could be worth $100 million in its first year .

The impact of this will be the increase of employments at each phase of its cultivation and distribution. The possibility for experts in Australia to get the chance to study medical marijuana could increase significantly. These benefits also help the world in an overall Cannabis export industry.

The business offer of Cannabis through retail outlets or coffee-houses will also stay restrained. Be that as it may, the laws brief the undeniable query: if individuals are growing cannabis plants, where are they getting the seeds?

A person would not be accused of possession or cultivation of a cannabis plant under the new ACT laws. However, the person giving the seeds or plants would be an offense.

Federal Laws

Intense vulnerability, despite everything, exists over potential clashes between these new ACT laws and federal laws that criminalize the possession of marijuana.

As the Federal Criminal Code Act 1995 suggests, it would be an offense to have a controlled drug. It can convey a punishment of two years imprisonment.

Lawyer General Christian Porter MP has openly stated that the federal offenses will even now have full impact on the ACT. Accordingly, the Attorney-General’s office expects ACT police to enforce federal criminal laws after January 31. 2020 .

It will bring an odd circumstance where individuals growing plants at home by following the ACT could be violating federal laws.

When hoping to choose your cannabis seeds, you have to stay mindful of a couple of fundamental things. Cannabis seeds are assorted, and there is a wide range of varieties to browse all options.

Seeds are available into a couple of essential categories: Indicas, Sativas, and Hybrids. CBD-rich Ruderalis hereditary qualities is another most loved among growers. Ruderalis qualities are common for therapeutic purposes, and for the most part reproduced with Hybrids to make new, one of a kind, auto-flowering strains.

Sativa

Sativas ordinarily have a lot higher THC content than different strains but are low in CBD. It delivers a substantially more cerebral, uplifting, lively high.

Sativas are some growers’ personal top choice. Plants of this scientific categorization can initiate sentiments of positive thinking and well-being. It is spacey and produces stimulating impacts. It’s a reasonable option for the daytime.

Sativa plants are generally known for being tall, with numerous examples growing to well more than two meters. You can reach its long and slim leaves very quickly.

Indica

Indica hereditary qualities trace their source back to the hemp of the Indian subcontinent. Much like their Sativa partners, Indica strains by, and large contain high levels of THC. In any case, Indicas also contains similarly significant levels of non-psychoactive CBD, which basically ‘offsets’ psycho-activity of THC.

Indicas are a lot shorter than the Sativa, bringing about littler yields. While some strains are considerably more compact than others, Indicas can grow big and thick. It generally becomes more extensive and rounder than the Sativas. Numerous Indicas look a ton like bushes.

Indicas usually produce loads of littler side colas and parting branches, making them the most straightforward to grow inside. Indica examples are also incredible relaxants, giving tranquility and stress alleviation. They’re also profoundly compelling for decreasing aggravation, mitigating torment, and treating conditions like epilepsy and insomnia.

Hybrids

Hybrids are the type of Cannabis that one can achieve by the crossbred of two different types of Cannabis. It contrives a blend of different characteristics from their hereditary guardians — Sativa and Indica.

Hybrids are half Sativa and half Indica – or something in between. For Hybrids strains, it’s pivotal to know the hereditary properties of your specific seeds. You may have to get some ideas on growing the plant.

Auto-Flowering

Auto-flowering cannabis seeds are a brilliant choice for indoor growers. It’s a good thing that these seeds can bloom at a fixed rate even with low sunlight. You will get your harvesting result within 70 days.

Auto-flowering Cannabis rose out of the short, stalky Ruderalis species. Auto-flowering, for the most part, won’t grow significantly more than a meter tall. After the seed germinates, the plant will automatically bloom at around 21 to 30 days, henceforth the expression “auto-flowering.”

If you buy feminized seeds, it will smooth the whole growing procedure for you. You genuinely need female plants, as they produce the flowers. Male seeds do not produce flowers. You can spare a great deal of time and money if you get your hands on some feminized seeds.

Our Thoughts

Australia currently permits medical cannabis usage. The laws for cannabis seeds are in line with this decision. The legal outcomes of buying cannabis seeds exist along a continuum. To a large measure, these laws are a function of the perceived intent of the purchaser or seller and the state/province where the deal is happening.

It is necessary to make it transparent to law enforcement officials that the cannabis seeds are for medical purposes if you need it for that purpose.

If you want to import cannabis seeds from outside of Australia, you have to make sure that your vendor knows all the procedures. It means that they send the seeds discreetly, so they hold a more favorable possibility of getting through customs.

If you plan to buy Cannabis seeds online and want to possess or use it, always remember to examine the distinct laws where you live or travel in Australia to avoid criminal punishments.

from seed to weed pictures

Dodder ( Cuscuta spp. )

Dodder is an annual parasitic weed that grows only by penetrating tissues of host plants to obtain water and nutrients. It is found throughout California up to an elevation of 8200 feet (2500 m). Species native to California usually grow on various herbs and shrubs in most natural communities and are not considered weeds in these conditions. However, some dodder species are problematic in agricultural fields, especially alfalfa, clovers, and tomatoes. Occasionally, dodder inhabits nursery crops and landscaped sites. Although the host plant range is large, it seldom affects monocots, except for onions and asparagus. The distinctive orange, red, or yellow twining dodder shoots are unlikely to be confused with any other plant. Species identification is difficult.

Seedling

Dodder seedlings lack cotyledons (seed leaves) and develop a small temporary root to support a roughly 1-1/2 to 4 inch (4–10 cm) threadlike, yellow, orange, or red shoot. Depending on the species, seedlings have from about 10 days to several weeks to attach to a suitable host; otherwise they die.

Mature plant

Threadlike, hairless, yellow, orange, or red shoots twine around host plants eventually creating a tangled mat. Knoblike organs along the shoot (haustoria) penetrate the host stem. Shoots either lack leaves or have very tiny red, yellow, or orange scalelike leaves pressed close to the stem. Dodder lacks the usual underground roots of other plants. Once it attaches to the host, the soil connections dry up and die.

Flowers

Flowers bloom generally from May through October. The tiny flower petals are less than 1/4 of an inch (6 mm) long, bell-shaped, and occur in inconspicuous clusters.

Fruits

Fruits consist of spherical, egg-shaped, or conical capsules that are mostly less than 1/5 of an inch (5 mm) in length.

Seeds

Each plant produces thousands of seeds that can remain dormant in the soil for years. There are one to four seeds per capsule. Seeds are tiny, hard, spherical, oblong, egg shaped, or angular and about 1/12 of an inch (2 mm) or less in diameter.

Identification and Management of Kochia and Russian Thistle – 6.314

by S. Bokan, K. Crumbaker, and G. Beck * (12/12)

Quick Facts…

  • Read and comply with all herbicide labels, organic or nonorganic, for application rates, mixing instructions, protective equipment, re-entry period, grazing or harvest restrictions and other safety information.
  • Kochia and Russian thistle, which are summer annuals, are troublesome annual weeds of rangelands, pastures, fields, disturbed areas, gardens, roadsides, ditchbanks, and small acreages. If uncontrolled, they become tumbleweeds that can disperse seeds over a large area.
  • Nitrate, oxalate, sulfates, saponins, and alkaloids are found in kochia at levels that can cause poisoning in cattle and sheep. The likelihood of poisoning increases as the plant matures or when drought stressed.
  • Russian thistle can accumulate toxic levels of nitrates which can cause acute respiratory difficulty and sudden death in cattle and sheep.

Weed Description

Figure 1. Russian thistle seedling.

Kochia (Kochia scoparia L.) and Russian thistle (Salsola tragus L.) are troublesome annual weeds of rangelands, pastures, fields, disturbed areas, gardens, roadsides, ditchbanks, and small acreages. Both species are non-native to the United States. Kochia, a native of Asia, was introduced from Europe. Russian thistle originated in Russia and was brought to the U.S. in the late 1800’s as a contaminant of North Dakota flax seed. Kochia is found in all western states except Alaska. Russian thistle is found in every state in the U.S., except Alaska and Florida. Both plants reproduce only from seed; therefore preventing seed-set is important for successful management. Competition from desirable plant species will limit Russian thistle and kochia establishment and site dominance.

Figure 2. Kochia seedlings.

Kochia is a summer annual plant, with many branches forming pyramidal or conical shaped bushes 6 ft. tall or greater. Leaves are small, fuzzy and gray-green in color. Leaves on older plants are alternate, linear shaped and 0.5 to 2 in. long and often hairy. The stems are highly branched and green or red tinged. When the seedlings germinate in the spring, infestations appear to be a graygreen mat. Kochia typically will germinate many times during the growing season, often beginning in March with last flushes occurring from August to early September. Flowers are inconspicuous. Seeds are dispersed when the plant matures and stems break off at the base; the plant then becomes a tumbleweed.

Figure 3. Mature kochia.

Russian thistle, a large, bushy, prickly summer annual weed, can grow to 3 ft. tall. The stems are erect, many-branched and normally have red or purple striping. When
seedlings first emerge they look similar to grass seedlings. The leaves are alternate, small, narrow and appear scale-like with a stiff spine. The flowers, accompanied by a pair of spiny, floral bracts, are green and very inconspicuous. Russian thistle dries out and becomes a tumbleweed, spreading seeds as it rolls with the wind across landscapes.

Livestock Poisonings

Nitrate, oxalate, sulfates, saponins, and alkaloids are found in kochia at levels that can cause poisoning in cattle and sheep. While it can be used as forage in some areas, other forage species should also be available to avoid the possibility of livestock poisoning. The likelihood of poisoning increases as the plant matures or when drought stressed.

Russian thistle can accumulate toxic levels of nitrates which can cause acute respiratory difficulty and sudden death in cattle and sheep. Russian thistle contains oxalates, which may result in kidney failure in cattle and sheep if ingested.

Uses and Values

Kochia may provide good forage quality when the plant is young, however, the forage quality declines as the plant matures. The value to wildlife is shared by many species. Deer and pronghorn eat the foliage; seeds are consumed by songbirds and upland game birds. Kochia also provides loafing and nesting cover for upland game birds.

Russian thistle is fair forage when the plant is young. When the plant matures, it becomes unpalatable due to the spike-like inflorescence. When mature, Russian thistle provides excellent cover for pheasants, while small mammals and songbirds will feed on the seeds and foliage.

Integrated Weed Management Recommendation

The first step to controlling either of these plants is to keep current plants from producing seed that is added to the seed repository in soils. Limit disturbances such as tractor, animal and people traffic through infested areas to decrease its spread. Remove tumbleweeds from fence lines to keep plants from continuing to spread seed.

Kochia has a shallow taproot and can be easily pulled or hoed out at early growth stages. If it has already started producing seed, it is best to collect the plants and dispose of them, preventing further soil infestation. In fields, light tillage can disrupt the young plants from the soil. Mowing or cutting are limited options and must be timed to prevent the plant from regrowing and producing seed. Kochia will continue to produce seed on branches below mowing levels. Maintaining healthy pastures or fields will keep kochia from establishing.

Herbicides that will control kochia effectively include fluroxypyr (sold under the trade names of Vista and Starane), dicamba, and glyphosate. Fluroxypyr and dicamba are selective herbicides that will control broadleaf weeds and typically not injure grasses. 2,4-D, that is often applied for kochia control, is not effective. Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide that injures or kills most vegetation contacted. Glyphosate is especially effective for controlling large kochia. Kochia biotypes resistant to glyphosate have been found, particularly in wheat-growing regions. Control from herbicides is best when applied when plants are small and in the 2-6 in. stage rather than on small fuzzy seedlings with little leaf surface area. Use of a non-ionic surfactant is recommended to allow the herbicide to penetrate the hairs and reach the leaf surface. Methylated seed oil at 1 to 2 qt/A is recommended when using fluroxypyr to control large kochia plants.

Organic herbicides, such as those containing acetic acid or clove oil, can be used to control kochia. These organic herbicides are contact materials and largely non-selective, but will not control perennials. They are corrosive to both skin and respiratory systems. Read the label before purchasing or using the product. Due to the hairs on the kochia leaves, the use of surfactants will aid organic herbicide absorption.

Russian thistle is easily pulled or hoed out, at early growth stages. If plants have already started producing seed, it is best to collect the plants and dispose of them to prevent new contributions to the soil seed reserve. Pulling the plants at later stages may require wearing gloves for comfort, due to the spike-like inflorescence. In fields, light tillage can disrupt the young plants from the soil. Mowing is a limited option that must be timed to prevent the plant from being able to regrow and produce seed, and is best done when the plant is beginning to bloom. Desirable plants may be damaged if mowing is too low. Maintaining healthy pastures or fields will prevent the establishment of Russian thistle.

Herbicides that will control Russian thistle include 2,4-D, dicamba, or glyphosate (sold under the trade name Roundup). Dicamba and 2,4-D are selective herbicides that will control many broadleaf weeds but usually do not injure grasses. Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide that can injure or kill most vegetation contacted. Chemical control is best applied in the spring when plants are rapidly growing.

Organic chemicals can be used, such as those containing acetic acid or clove oil. These organic herbicides are contact materials and largely non-selective, but will not control perennials. They are also corrosive to skin and respiratory systems. Read the label before purchasing or using the product.

For best results on a stand where both species are present, use a mixture of dicamba plus 2,4-D, or dicamba plus fluroxypyr (Vista).

Read and comply with all herbicide labels, organic or nonorganic, for application rates, mixing instructions, protective equipment, re-entry period, grazing or harvest restrictions and other safety information.

germinating weed seed and leaves popped out

How to Speed Up Seed Germination During Winter and Spring

If you live in a colder part of the nation and are an avid gardener, you’re probably champing at the bit to get some seeds in the ground. If you have a greenhouse, that might only be a few months away. If you’re a gardener in a colder state like Colorado, you’re going to have longer to wait. And no matter how long your growing season is, you’re likely to want to get to harvest faster once you plant your seeds. Which leads to a topic that often comes up here at our nursery supply company: how to speed up seed germination.

It’s a question that home gardeners and nursery suppliers have been asking for a very long time. While genetic engineering can help a plant grow faster, there are some aspects of speeding up seed germination that you can control. Let’s take a look at ways that you can get those seed popping faster.

Soak Them In Water

There’s not much easier advice than this! All you have to do is pre-soak the seeds in hot tap water for 24 hours. The water penetrates the seed coat and allows the insides of the plant to break from the seed more easily. Usually this occurs naturally in the soil, but it can take a much longer time.

The only thing you have to be careful of is letting the seeds soak for too long. Any longer than 24 hours and they could start to rot even after you put them in soil.

Scarification

Scarification is another physical means of speeding up seed germination. The purpose of a seed is to protect what’s inside and then provide initial nutrition to the plant. Because of this, the seed coat is quite hard and fairly good at protecting its interior. Scarring the seeds will remove a bit of this seed coat in order to let water in, which starts the germination process.

There are a couple of ways that you can scar a seed before putting in a ground. If you only have a few that you’re planting, you can take a knife and knick each seed, or scrape each with a bit of sandpaper. But that can get quite tedious if you’re planting hundreds of seeds, so you can speed up the process by shaking them in a jar with a piece of sandpaper.

Seed Stratification

Seed stratification is the process of tricking a seed into germination earlier than it would when it’s out in the wild. Stratification is often used for wildflowers that have a very hard outer coat on their seeds. This coat prevents the seeds from opening too early in the wild if there’s a particularly warm February day.

Seed stratification is necessary for plants that are expecting to overwinter in the ground. But if you get your seeds in the mail in March, you don’t want to have to wait another entire year before you can enjoy them. Seed stratification involves putting seeds in a moist, soil-filled bag for a time, usually 10 days to three months. This “tells” the seeds that they are cold, and that they can go ahead and wake up and start germinating. This process is especially good for our nursery customers who need full plants to sell to customers by April.

If you get your seeds in the fall and can actually make use of the natural cold outside, you can overwinter them in your garden. The problem with this is recovering the seeds later, because locating them can be difficult. The best way to find this is the put them in pots and bury the pots themselves, then dig them up and transfer to them wherever you want them when they start to sprout.

Keep Them Warm

No matter the kind of plants you are using, there’s one thing that most of just love: warmth. Keeping seeds warm tells them that the summer has arrived. Of course, that’s the purpose of most greenhouses. If you don’t have a greenhouse, keep the seeds in a south-facing window. You can even use something like a seedling heating mat that warms the seeds in their pots.

Don’t Forget to Harden Them Off

Plants that are started indoor have it pretty easy. After all, you soaked the seeds and scarred them so that the plant itself could emerge. Then you told them that winter was over and warmed them up considerably!

Since they didn’t have to work hard in order to get out of the seeds, seedlings haven’t been hardened by the world yet. They aren’t used to being cold or being whipped around by the wind, so seedlings that have been raised indoors are more likely to die than those that have been grown directly in the garden, even if they look identical.

Hardening plants is easy. Just take them outside in Spring for a couple of hours each day, then a bit longer each day after that. Eventually the wind will “harden” them to the wind and cold, at which point you’ll be able to plant them in the ground. Just don’t forget about them and leave them out overnight during their first day, or all of the work you did up above will be for nothing!

Then Come Back For Your Gardening Tool!

Of course, seed germination is on the first step to a healthy plant. Once your plants are growing in the garden, you’ll need to take care of them with the best garden hand tool around. Find them right here, and happy planting!

A Beginner’s Guide To Germinating Cannabis Seeds

Germination is also known as popping and it is the initial first step in starting your homegrown cannabis stash.

Please fill out image credit

Each new plant that is grown from a seed goes through the process of germination. Germination is also known as popping and it is the initial first step in starting your homegrown cannabis stash. The cannabis seeds of varying quality can be purchased from a variety of sources. In general, you are better off buying your seeds from an online seed bank. Online seed banks offer good quality seeds that are genetically diverse. The only potential issue with buying online is that when it comes to international transactions you might run into some legal gray areas, depending on each country’s laws.

What do you need to know about cannabis seeds?

How to germinate weed seeds? When you buy your seeds, you will need to make sure that they are matured. You should be buying seeds that look dark brown with lighter accents and a hard feel. Seeds that feel fresh to the touch and are green in colour, have not reached their full maturity.

Once you have gotten your hands on the seeds you will need to ensure that you have the necessary space in order for your plants to grow into healthy weed. It is important that you do pop any seeds when you are unsure of your grow space.

What is the best way to germinate your cannabis seeds?

In order for them to pop, cannabis seeds need three key elements, namely air, water and heat. There are so many methods you can use to germinate your cannabis seeds. The most simple and most common method for popping involves using paper towels that are saturated in water.

For the paper towel method you will need:

  • Seeds
  • Paper towels
  • Two clean plates
  1. Unroll four sheets of paper towels and soak them in distilled water. The paper towel sheets must be soaked but they should not have excess any water running off.
  2. Place two of the paper towels on a plate. Place your cannabis seeds on the plate, they should be at least an inch apart from each other. Then, cover the seeds with the remaining two sheets of paper towels.
  3. The seeds will need a dark place to pop. To create this, form a dorm structure by taking another plate and flipping it over to cover the cannabis seeds.
  4. Ensure that the area that you will keep them in is warm. You will need to make sure the temperature is around 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once you have completed these steps, your waiting time begins. You will need to periodically check the paper towels to make sure they still have water in them. Keep your cannabis seeds happy by applying more water to maintain the moisture. Each seed is unique, some germinate in no time while others can take several days to pop. Once the seed splits and a single sprout appears, the seed has germinated. The sprout is the taproot, which will later become the main stem of the plant. Just remember the sprout is a good sign of growth and successful germination. It is critical that you keep the germination area sterile, take care not to touch the seeds or the sprout as they begin to split.

Once the taproot appears you can transfer your germinated cannabis seed into its growing medium. You can start by transferring them into small 2-inch pots. Fill your pots with loose, airy potting soil. Using a pen or pencil You will need to poke a hole in the middle of the soil about a quarter-inch down. Use a pair of tweezers to transfer the taproot. Gently pick it up and drop it in the hole with the taproot facing down. Now you can lightly cover the seed with soil.

The next stage is watering the soil. To start with, use a spray bottle to give moisture without overwatering the soil. While the newly germinated seed needs water, over-watering it can suffocate and kill the delicate taproot. Remember to pay close attention to the temperature and the moisture level of the soil to keep your seed happy. In about a week or so you should begin to see a seedling begin to emerge from the soil.

The germination process does not always go according to plan. Some seeds will be duds while others will be slow and take longer to sprout. Some seeds will pop quickly and grow rapidly. The beauty of cannabis seeds is that you can often tell which plants or genetics will thrive right from the beginning stages. Observing how each seed develops during germination will help you in determining which plants you want to take cuttings for clones and which need to be bred with another strong plant.

Seed or a Weed? Identifying Garden Sprouts

Lately I’ve been playing a game of “Find the Celeriac.” Remember those oh-so-tiny celeriac seeds I shared on my instagram? Well, I had forgotten that their sprouts are quite tiny, too! I seeded two whole flats of these tiny seeds. Celeriac takes forever to germinate. Even knowing this, I was about to give up hope for them because 1. the seeds are old and 2. the trays ended up off the heat mat by mistake for their first several days. But suddenly, one day, I saw a few uniform-looking bright green *dots* on the flat. It was them! I was so glad. Can you spot the young sprout in this zoomed-in picture of six cells?

A flat is roughly 12 of these six packs together. So, that’s a very, very tiny sprout my friends!

Here’s the close-up of the above new sprout (located in the lower right corner of the photo).

And here’s a close-up of a celeriac sprout fully open after shedding its seed husk.

Finding the seed-sprouts among the weed-sprouts

Spotting the sprouts isn’t usually the only trouble – identifying your intended seeds from the other weed-sprouts can bring some uncertainty to the task. Store-bought growing medium is often sterilized, so you might not have to do much of this during your indoor seed-starting. It’s an essential part of sowing seeds outdoors, however.

For myself, I mix my own growing medium without cooking it. This has never been a problem, but it can bring around some fun surprises!

In this picture, all the red sprouts are “weed” sprouts, not the peppers I’m intending to grow here. I knew by the color and the heavy load of them that these sprouts must be amaranth. I have a mild obsession with red amaranth and let those giant deep red plants grow in every place all summer. It was no surprise, then, that their seeds made it to my germination station via my compost!

It’s necessary to cut back the weed sprouts so that the seeds you want to care for have all the space and all the nutrients.

The more we garden, the easier identifying our seed sprouts will get. Here’s a few helpful things to look for when determining what to pull and what to keep.

1. Observe any seed husks that are still attached to the plant.

Here, if you remember the distinct look of a pepper seed, we can see that this sprout definitely belongs to some kind of pepper. The more you grow, the easier it will be to identify seeds. In any case, though, if the sprout still has the shell of a seed attached, keep it and let it grow.

2. Observe if there are several sprouts that look the same

This method for identifying your sprouts becomes especially obvious if the sprouts are appearing in a solid row (assuming you planted in a row). In this picture, we can see two strong looking green sprouts, a random smaller green sprout and a few of those prolific red amaranth sprouts. It becomes clear that the solid green ones are the keepers and we can pull all the rest.

3. Remember the shape of the cotelydon leaves

This method for identifying will be easier with some experience under your belt. Soon, you’ll be able to identify what plant is growing simply based on the look of those initial leaves. Take note – not based on the leaf shape you might remember from the garden, but based on the shape of the cotelydon leaves. Those are the first leaves that the plant sprouts, and they can be vastly different in appearance from the plants’ true leaves.

In this picture, I’m super familiar with the heart-shaped look of many brassica plants’ cotelydon leaves. I also recognize that the leaves on the right-hand side belong to something in the squash family. In this case, I had sown kale seeds, so I pull the squash sprout.

Lastly, if you’re still not sure, I recommend leaving all alone and observing the sprouts until the more familiar true leaves appear. Out in the garden, watch close because those weeds can grow fast if you don’t get them when they’re small! Soon a kale leaf (or something familiar) will pop out, and things will be clear! I practice this on the regular with many “weeds” or volunteer plants in my garden. I often let things grow in my garden just to see what it is. I have a soft spot for those wildflowers, indeed.

Halfway through cleaning up my seed flats, my pile of carnage looks like this. I actually find this task really calming and mindful. I can adore the little sprouts and be filled with wonder at the miracle of the seed as I go about pulling anything that doesn’t belong.
